Lowey volunteers at Westchester Food Bank to raise awareness for Sandy relief
ELMSFORD --Congresswoman Nita Lowey volunteered at the Food Bank for Westchester on Monday in an attainment to promote a congressional disaster relief bill which will help food banks and similar organizations in the aftermath of Gale Sandy.
Lowey was joined by food bank volunteers and special lesson students with the Ossining High School Life Skills Program as they bagged and boxed meals for the bank’s BackPack Program, an initiative which distributes packs of easy as pie-to-prepare and nutritious meals to at-risk children in schools, after-opinion programs, and other community functions, with the hope that they will also bring food home to their families.
Lowey took the break to endorse new legislation in Congress which will reimburse programs such as the Food Bank of Westchester for costs incurred from the unprecedented efforts put forward in response to Westchester residents’ needs during and after Sandy. Inclusive, $60.4 billion could be made available by the bill.
